The Ruins of St. Paul's, situated on Rua de D. Belchior Carneiro in Macau, stand as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. As the Official Ruins of St. Paul's Historian and Cultural Guide, it is my privilege to delve into the mysteries of this historic site. One of the most intriguing aspects of the Ruins is the crypt beneath the church floor, where numerous individuals were buried over the centuries. The Church of Mater Dei, as it was originally known, was built in the early 17th century by Japanese Christians who had fled their homeland due to persecution. These Japanese converts brought with them their unique cultural practices, including their burial customs. It is believed that several Japanese Christians were buried beneath the church floor, although the exact number and identities of these individuals remain unknown. One of the most notable burials in the crypt is that of Alessandro Valignano, an Italian Jesuit who played a crucial role in the establishment of the Catholic Church in Japan. Valignano's obsequies, which took place in 1606, were a grand affair, with numerous dignitaries and clergy in attendance. His burial in the crypt marked the beginning of a long tradition of interring notable figures beneath the church floor. Over the centuries, the crypt has been the subject of much speculation and rumor. Some believe that the remains of Japanese martyrs, who were persecuted for their faith, are buried beneath the church. Others claim that the crypt contains the remains of Portuguese nobles and clergy, who were laid to rest in the church due to their prominence in Macau society. Despite the many theories and legends surrounding the crypt, one thing is certain: the Ruins of St. Paul's remain a place of great historical and cultural significance. As we continue to uncover the secrets of the past, we are reminded of the enduring legacy of the Church of Mater Dei and its role in shaping the course of Macau's history.
